Valve Replacement Surgery

Heart valve replacement is a critical surgical procedure performed when natural valves (such as the aortic or mitral valve) can no longer function properly due to stenosis, regurgitation, or infection. The damaged valve is replaced with either a mechanical or biological valve, restoring proper blood flow and significantly improving symptoms such as shortness of breath, chest pain, and fatigue.

What is the difference between valve replacement and pacemaker implantation, and which has a harder recovery?

Pacemaker implantation is minimally invasive, requiring only a small incision. Valve replacement is usually an open-heart procedure involving opening the chest (sternotomy), so recovery is much longer and more intense.

Most patients stay in the hospital 5–7 days (including ICU recovery). Light daily activities usually begin 4–6 weeks after surgery with medical approval.

Valve replacement is always performed under full general anesthesia. After surgery, patients typically require mechanical ventilation for several hours to a day until stable.

Yes. Mechanical cardiac devices may trigger security alarms. Patients should carry their medical ID card and request manual screening instead of passing through body scanners.

Mechanical valves have very long lifespans, potentially lifelong, but require lifelong anticoagulants such as warfarin. Biological valves last shorter and usually require anticoagulants only for a limited period.
