How long does endoscopy take, and is it painful?

The procedure usually takes less than 20–30 minutes and is performed under sedation, so the patient does not feel pain and has no memory of the procedure.

To ensure a clear view of the esophagus and stomach and to prevent the risk of aspiration (stomach contents entering the lungs) during sedation, it is necessary to fast for at least 6–8 hours before the procedure.

Yes. During the diagnostic procedure, the doctor can also perform biopsy, polyp removal, or cauterization of bleeding sites.

Since sedation is used, it is recommended to rest for the remainder of the day and avoid driving. Light activities can generally be resumed the following day.

Endoscopy is used to accurately diagnose stomach ulcers, inflammation, severe reflux, gastrointestinal bleeding, strictures, and to look for signs of esophageal and stomach cancers.
