What is Cardiac Angiography?

Cardiac angiography is a minimally invasive procedure used to examine the blood vessels of the heart and identify blockages or narrowing.

How It Works:

  1. Preparation: The patient lies on a procedure table. The entry site (usually the groin or wrist) is disinfected and numbed. General anesthesia is not required.
  2. Catheter Insertion: A thin, flexible tube (catheter) is inserted into the artery and guided toward the heart using X-ray imaging.
  3. Contrast Injection: A special dye (contrast agent) is injected to make the coronary arteries visible on X-ray images.
  4. Imaging & Diagnosis: The cardiologist evaluates blood flow and detects any blockages or narrowing.
  5. Treatment (if necessary): If a significant blockage is found, angioplasty with stent placement can be performed immediately. After completion, the catheter is removed and the entry site is pressed to stop bleeding.

1. Is angiography painful?

No. The procedure is performed under local anesthesia. Patients may feel a warm sensation during contrast injection.

If the procedure is diagnostic only, the patient is monitored for a few hours and can usually be discharged the same day or the next day. If stenting is performed, a slightly longer observation may be required.

Yes. If a significant blockage is detected, the cardiologist can perform angioplasty (stenting) immediately during the same session.

In healthy individuals, the contrast dye usually does not cause any complications. Drinking plenty of fluids is recommended to help eliminate it from the body faster. Rarely, allergic reactions or effects on the kidneys may occur.

Recovery after diagnostic angiography is usually very quick. After one day of rest, light activities can be resumed. After stenting, the doctor will provide specific post-procedure recommendations.
